458 Spider

First mid-rear engine with a retractable hard top

Ferrari 458 Spider, the pleasure of open air driving

In 2011, Ferrari expanded its range of 8-cylinder cars introducing the Ferrari 458 Spider. Presented to the public at the 64th Frankfurt International Motor Show, the Ferrari 458 Spider shares the same technological solutions as the award-winning 458 Italia. This means super sports performance, with extraordinary handling, all reinforced by the unique pleasure of open air driving. And today still available as a Ferrari Approved pre-owned car.

A world first for a saloon car with a central-rear V8 engine, the Ferrari 458 Spider features a foldable hardtop, an innovative solution patented by the Maranello-based company.

The 458 Spider's beating heart is the same 4499 cm3 and 570 HP direct injection V8 engine as the 458 Italia, winner of the 2011 International Engine of the Year award. Identical transmission system: the F1 double clutch 7-speed gearbox with steering wheel controls. The 458 Spider maintains the excellent dynamic qualities of the coupé version thanks to the complex electronic control system, starting with the E-Diff3, which integrates the F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS.

Special calibrations, such as the accelerator pedal map and the damping calibration of the multilink suspension, designed to ensure maximum sportiness combined with the unique pleasure of open-roof driving, and an engine sound designed for full engagement in the open-roof configuration, make the 458 Ferrari Spider a benchmark in the long tradition of Prancing Horse sports spiders.

The foldable hardtop of the Ferrari 458 Spider

The Ferrari 458 Spider adopts an aluminium hardtop. A solution whose many benefits compared to the more traditional canvas roof, includes weight savings (in the order of 25 kilos) and an opening and closing time of only 14 seconds.

The hard top is thus perfectly integrated into the overall design of the car, designed to fold down in front of the engine compartment, cutting the space needed to house it. The excellent aerodynamic values and overall performance of the highly acclaimed 458 Italia are unchanged Indeed, the specialist press has for years chosen the 458 Spider as the benchmark car in its segment.

Ferrari 458 Spider, the technical solutions

The line of the Ferrari 458 Spider is decidedly innovative, but still functional to performance: The rear fins have been designed to optimise airflow to the engine housing and to the intakes of the clutch and transmission oil radiators.

A glass wind stop, electronically adjustable in height, allows a pleasant conversation between the occupants of the car up to a speed of over 200 km/h. This is thanks to the in-depth study carried out by the technicians at Maranello, resulting in the optimal distribution of airflows inside the cabin.

The new technical solutions adopted for the chassis ensure the same level of structural rigidity as the coupé version, regardless of whether the vehicle is open or closed. The result is a car, now available courtesy of the Ferrari Approved programme, which provides unique driving excitement, combining typical Ferrari performance with outdoor driving pleasure.
